Energy Balance: The Truth About Weight

Fad diets, “forbidden” foods, miracle promises: few topics are as rife with myths as weight. Yet, behind all the noise, there’s just one principle that governs weight gain and loss—and understanding it changes everything.
The Basic Principle: Inputs and Outputs
Energy balance is based on a simple law of physics: energy is neither created nor destroyed; it is consumed, expended, or stored. When the calories consumed equal the calories expended, weight remains stable. When you consume more than you expend, you gain weight; when you consume less, you lose weight. This is the “calories in, calories out” rule.
"Intake" refers to the calories in food and drinks—protein, carbohydrates, fat, and alcohol. But it's "output" that we understand the least.
What Goes Into Your "Outings"
Your daily energy expenditure is divided into three parts:
Resting metabolism (60–75%): the energy that keeps your body functioning at rest. Crucially, it is proportional to your muscle mass—the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, even when you’re not moving.
The thermic effect of food (8–10%): the energy expended to digest and absorb what you eat.
Physical activity (the most variable factor): intentional exercise , but also all the small movements of daily life (posture, walking).
This is where kinesiology has the most direct effect: building muscle mass boosts your resting metabolic rate, and exercise increases the most variable component of energy expenditure.
Why Harsh Diets Fail
We often hear that a 3,500-kcal deficit is “all it takes” to lose a pound. This rule is outdated: the body isn’t just a simple equation. When faced with severe calorie restriction, it adapts—resting metabolism slows down, and muscles become more energy-efficient. This phenomenon, known as adaptive thermogenesis, is the main cause of weight loss plateaus and weight regain.
Added to this are hormonal changes: hunger (ghrelin) increases, while satiety (leptin) decreases. This is why very low-calorie diets often backfire on those who follow them—and why professional guidance is essential.
More isn't always a bad thing
For those looking to gain muscle, a moderate calorie surplus (about 350 to 500 kcal per day) is actually desirable—provided it is combined with resistance training and an adequate intake of protein, the key macronutrient for muscle growth. Conversely, a chronic and uncontrolled calorie surplus leads to fat accumulation and, over time, to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.
Measure Rather Than Guess
The weak link in any weight-loss program is that we estimate our energy expenditure instead of measuring it.
