Why Your Metabolism Slows Down (and How to Speed It Up)
"Metabolism" is often blamed for failed weight loss attempts or fitness plateaus. But what does that really mean—and can we do anything about it? The answer is yes, and the key factor might surprise you.

Metabolism refers to all the processes that convert nutrients—fats and carbohydrates—into energy. In other words, it’s how you burn calories—whether to move, keep your heart beating, breathe, or repair your tissues. A high metabolism burns more calories than expected for someone of the same age, height, and gender: it’s your best defense against weight gain, and an asset for recovery and injury prevention.
Three Major Factors Contributing to the Slowdown
Age: As we get older, it becomes harder to maintain muscle mass, and our bodies produce fewer hormones that stimulate metabolism. But this decline is modest—and largely reversible through exercise.
Nutrition: Paradoxically , an excessively severe calorie deficit causes the body to slow down its metabolism—it breaks down muscle and makes the remaining muscle more “energy-efficient.” These are two survival mechanisms that hinder further progress.
Training: This is the fastest and most powerful factor. Strength training is key here: it increases muscle mass (an energy-intensive tissue) and the energy expenditure of each unit of muscle. Be careful, however, not to overtrain, as this can have the opposite effect.
It’s also worth remembering that weight loss depends first and foremost on energy balance—consuming fewer calories than you burn—long before the type of workout you choose. The workout itself determines the quality of that weight loss: preserving muscle rather than losing it.
Measure Rather Than Guess
The problem is that you can't "feel" your metabolism slowing down.
