  • Each one-MET increase in physical fitness corresponded to an annual reduction of approximately $1,592 (a 5.6% decrease in costs).

  • Moving to a higher health quartile resulted in annual savings of $4,163 per patient.

Notably, the effect was even more pronounced among people without cardiovascular disease—proving that the link is not due to pre-existing disease—and among people who are overweight or obese, where the potential for prevention is greatest.
